• Have fresh water available at all times.  This means changing water daily or using an automatic waterer.
• Hose down your pet. Many dogs love this procedure. You can get similar results by using a wet towel to cool off a cat.
• An inexpensive kiddie pool is a good idea for dogs that love the water. Pools can be a drowning risk so make sure the pool is safe both for dogs and children.
• Make sure water dishes are secure and as spill proof as possible. Spill proof dishes are available. And you may want to consider a second bowl or pail just in case.
• Try taking walks on grass or soft ground. Cement and pavement can be hot and although paws are tough, they are also sensitive. Periodically check your pet’s paws for redness and pain. If necessary consider a paw protection topical.
• Keep your pet well groomed. Consult your vet or groomer to find out what is best for your particular pet. There are a variety of grooming supplies available including brushes, clippers, shears and scissors.
• For outside pets make sure shade is available at all times. Make sure there are shade trees around or that your kennel has a shade screen or cover.

With some planning and preparation you can keep your pets cool this summer and avoid the possibility of heat stroke.
