Disinfectants kill germs on clean solid surfaces very well (tile, steel, cement, etc.) because the disinfectant easily comes into contact with the germs. However, disinfectants do not penetrate very far into porous surfaces (dirt, feces, wood shavings, etc.) and germs end up “hiding out” in this organic matter. To kill germs it is best to first clean dirt, grime, feces, etc. off solid surfaces
and then apply disinfectants.
