What are the advantages of added fat in horse diets?
•Over the last 20 years, extensive research on added dietary fat for horses has shown fats provide more energy per lb, are digested more efficiently, and actually decrease the thermal load in working horses compared to grains. Dietary fat also has a sparing effect on muscle glycogen stores, allowing horses to do more work before tiring (refer to Horse Feed Facts®, "Feeding Fat").
•Substitution of fat for some of the grain in high-energy rations decreases the need for fermentive digestion of starches, thereby reducing the likelihood of colic, tying up, laminitis, and founder.
•Several kinds of added fat have been fed to horses, including rendered animal fat and various vegetable oils. Corn oil is the most palatable of the pure vegetable oils used in horse rations and has been preferred by most horse owners. However, feeding of pure vegetable oils can be difficult in cold weather, can be messy, and can result in dilution of vitamins and minerals in the total ration. Also, some horses might refuse to eat feeds that are top-dressed with vegetable oils.
