For vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of veremia caused by West Nile Virus. The virus was first isolated and identified from birds, mosquitoes and mammals including horses in the states of the northwestern United States in 1999. Since then, the virus has spread to southwestern and Midwestern states. If you vaccinate against western, eastern, and or venezuelen encephalitis, you should vaccinate against west nile also. The efficacy was demonstrated in horses that received two doses of the vaccine and were challenged one year post-vaccination with West Nile Virus. The vaccine protected 95% of the vaccinates against infection, while 82% of the controls were viremic. Owners should be advised that vaccinated horses may develop antibody to West Nile Virus, which may affect their ability to export the animal.
Inject 1 ml dose intramuscularly using aseptic technique. Administer a second 1 ml dose 3 to 4 weeks after the first dose. A 1 ml booster dose should be given annually. Early revaccination may be advisable when horses are faced with an outbreak or with other conditions which might make heavy exposure likely.
