It is unusual in that it stays in the body for quite a while allowing for once a day dosing and for shorter treatment courses for most infections.\u003cbr\u003e Azithromycin like all macrolide antibiotics prevents bacteria from growing by interfering with their ability to make proteins. Animals being treated with cisapride should not be given azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotic . Drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 (e.g. carbamazepine, terfenadine, cyclosporine, hexobarbital, and phenytoin) will have their serum levels elevated by azithromycin.
